  • After the exit of PepsiCo as the title sponsor of the hugely popular IPL, Chinese mobile phone maker may replace the beverage company as the new title sponsor of the multi-million dollar cricket tournament
  • In a shocking incident in the national capital of the country, two minors were brutally gangraped in the Western Delhi area. This comes after another rape of a 4-year old girl last week
  • Upset over the politics played over the beef ban, BJP top brass has finally decided to rein in its leaders from making controversial political statements in the media that may harm the image of the party.   • In another shocking death related to Vyapam scam, former IFS Officer Vijay Bahadur Singh, who was an observer in 12 recruitment tests conducted under Vyapam, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Odisha. His body has been found on a railway track near Belpahar
  • Women officers from Indian Navy are planning to approach Supreme Court because the Navy did not reinstate them as per the order of the Delhi High Court. Therefore, the officers are going to file a contempt of court case in the SC

Banking and Finance

  • Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballamer has taken a 4% stake in the micro-blogging site Twitter. With this, he has become one of the largest shareholders of the site, outside the company
  • RBI has opened a new sub office in Imphal, Manipur in order to reach more to the north-eastern states. The office will take care of various departments like consumer education, financial inclusion and development along with market intelligence
  • Indian foreign exchange reserves saw a jump in the week ended on October 9, 2015 as the foreign exchange reserves soared to $353.069 billion, up $2.3 billion compared to last week
  • The Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has promised the business fraternity that India is committed to introduce a globally-competitive tax regime which will be beneficial for the business enterprises. The government is planning to slash the corporate tax to 25% over the period of next four years
  • Himachal Pradesh-based Public Sector Undertaking Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam has paid Rs 280 crore in dividend to the Union Government which owns a 64.5% stake in the company. This is the highest ever dividend paid by the company in its history since inception
  • The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises is planning to introduce the Direct Benefit Transfer facility for giving subsidies to the beneficiaries of Prime Minster Employment Generation Programme. After the ministry has launched a single page registration form in order to simplify processes, around 10000 people have signed up for the project
  • IndiGo has decided the price band for its shares that are going to be issued under the Initial Public Offering planned on October 27 when the issue will be placed in the market. The company has decided to keep the price range 700-765 for the shares selling which it is aiming to mop up a revenue of 3268 crore
  • In an effort to align its shareholding pattern with the RBI-mandated criterion, Equitas Holdings has taken the market route to raise capital to the tune of 1200 crore. The company has month received in-principle approval to set up Small Finance Bank in the country. This is the second time a micro-finance institution has hit the markets with the first one being SKS Microfinance which raised 1654 crore through an IPO last month
  • ICICI Bank has introduced “Money2World”, a fully online facility for the resident Indians to send money to any overseas bank. The facility will be a big boost to the outside remittance industry specially after the RBI has increaded the limit of outward remittance for individuals to $250000 from the previous limit of $125000

  • As part of reforms initiated in the National Blood Policy, the Union Health Ministry has cleared the blood banks to borrow blood units from one another in cases of shortage. The objective is to create a unified data base for the blood units available in the country so that patients can be provided with this at the time of need
  • Delhi government is on a drive to provide better road connectivity to the Delhites and as part of that, the government has planned to improve road connectivity by providing better metro journeys, app based pothole repair work etc. The national capital has around 1200 km of roads
  • Bangladesh and India are all set to join hands in the area of Disaster management as the Bangladesh army team has recently visited India on a four-day visit to understand the technology used by India in disaster mitigation and management. According to the National Disaster Response Force, the Bangladesh army is interested in collaboration in that area
  • International Civil Helicopters Conclave has been inaugurated in New Delhi by the Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Ashok Gajapathi Raju. The conclave seeks to bring together ideas from various stakeholders regarding the development of civil aviation sector
  • The Public Sector Enterprises Board has decided to appoint M K Surana as the new Chairman and Managing Director of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, the third largest oil-marketing company of the country. Surana will replace Nidhi Vasudeva who is due to retire in March, 2016
  • The Union Government has appointed G R Chandak as the new Director of Hyderabad-based Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD). CDFD is a premier organization under the administrative control of the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India
  • Onsari Gharti Magar has been appointed as the first woman speaker of the Parliament of Nepal after the lawmakers elected her as the speaker under the new constitution of the country. She belongs to the United Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist)
  • Mobile wallet service provider Paytm has tied-up with Mumbai Metro in its foray in the public transport system, the biggest source of transport in India. The Mumbai metro passengers can now recharge their smart cards on the Paytm platform
  • India is hosting the largest ever Indo-African Summit outside Africa, in New Delhi from October 26, 2015
  • In his maiden visit, Nepal’s new Deputy PM Kamal Thapa is on a visit to India from 17th The visit will conclude on the 19th October
  • Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has launched a post-doctoral fellowship in the name of Dr A P J Abdul Kalam in order to boost research in the area of environment and ecology in the country
  • 17th October is observed every year as the International Day for Eradication of Poverty after the United Nations designated it as a day for creating awareness regarding eradication of poverty around the world. The theme for this year’s event is: Building A sustainable Future: Coming Together to End Poverty and Discrimination
  • Russia and Pakistan have signed an agreement in order to build a gas pipeline from Karachi to Lahore in Pakistan. The pipeline is supposed to be 1100 km long with the estimated cost being $2 billion for the project
  • In a major shift of its policy, United States has announced that it will maintain military presence in Afganishthan beyond 2016 in order to free the country from the hands of anti-state elements
  • The Central Government is going to include the 101-km stretch of river Godavari from Nasik in Maharashtra to Rajahmundry in AP as a national waterway in the National Waterways Bill, 2015. This will make the stretch a valued one under the National Waterways framework
  • Bangladeshi delegates visited the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamil Nadu as the country is aiming to build a 1200 MW nuclear power plant with Russian assistance

  • Indian challenge continues in the Denmark Open Super Series Badminton Tournament as P V Sindhu has defeated World Champion Carolina Marin to reach the finals of the tournament. World no 1 Saina Nehwal has already made her exit in the second round
  • Amid threats from the Patel community in preventing the teams from reaching the venues, The Gujarat police have beefed up the security arrangements in Rajkot where the 3rd One Day international is scheduled to be held on Sunday
  • After taking charge as the President of BCCI, Shashank Manohar will chair his first working committee meeting in Mumbai today. The meeting will tell the world and Indian sports buffs what course of action the richest Cricket body in the world is going to take in order to revive the game
  • Liverpool failed to deliver yet again and this time, under new manager Jurgen Klopp. The German has failed to produce a win in his debut game as the Liverpool Manager against Tottenham Hotspur when the teams drew 0-0 in the encounter
  • India defeated Australia in the last league match of Sultan of Johor Hockey Tournament in Malaysia by 1-0 to set up a summit clash with Great Britain today. This is the fifth edition of the annual tournament that is held in Malaysia
