  • Union Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj is going today on a two day visit to Male, the capital of Maldives in order to chair the meeting of the India- Maldives Joint Commission which has been revived after a gap of 15 years. Mrs Swaraj will chair the meeting with Maldives Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon and also hold talks with the President Abdulla Yameen in order to boost the multifaceted relationship between India and Maldives
  • In an announcement by the Nobel Prize Committee, it has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize 2015 to the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet which has ensured the smooth transition of the country to a democracy after the ouster of its autocratic ruler in 2011. Four civil society organizations have been chosen for the prize because of their contribution in bringing stability to the country
  • Hand-in-Hand, a joint military exercise of India and China, is slated to begin on 12th October in Kunming. Starting in 2007, the exercise is aimed at promoting cooperation and interoperability between the two armies
  • Media Advisor to the Ex PM Atal Vihari Bajpayee, Ashok Tandon, singer Anup Jalota and Former Britannia Chief Sunil Alagh have been nominated by the three member committee headed by Vice President Hamid Ansari, to join as members in the Prasar Bharati Board. Apart from them, Sashi Shekhar, who was the head of an online media company was also cleared by the committee
  • Music Composer A R Rahman has been chosen as the cultural ambassador of Seychelles for his contribution to the country
  • Dr Shekhar Basu, a veteran in the atomic energy industry, has been appointed as the new chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission of India
  • Asian Centre for Human Rights Report on the status of mercy petitions in the country shows that nearly one third of the mercy petitions after independence have been commuted to life imprisonment. A total of 1572 cases have been settled favorably whereas 3534 cases have been rejected by the Supreme Court
  • Government has stopped printing gazette notifications on paper from October 1 and started publishing them online. This move has been estimated to save the government around 40 crore besides being user-friendly and environment friendly as well

  • Union government has decided to test 1000 samples of pesticides to test whether spurious products were sold to the farmers by the retailers and manufacturers. This came after Punjab saw its biggest ever destruction of crop in the state with about 2/3 rd of the total production got damaged
  • Pakistan called Indian deputy High Commissioner in Pakistan to express its displeasure over the cancellation of Samjhuta Express due to the protests of farmers on Indian side. This has caused 200 passengers to remain stranded on both the sides of the border
  • National Egg Day was celebrated on October 9 as per the directives of the International Egg Commission. The Egg Day is celebrated the second Friday of October every year to promote the nutritional value of eggs
  • October 9 is celebrated as the World Post Day as this was the day when International Postal Union was established in Berne, Switzerland. The day is being celebrated since 1969. The theme of the 2015 edition is “Tell us about the world you want to grow up in”.

  • Indian boxer Vijender Singh is going to make his professional boxing debut in Manchester against Britain’s Sonny Whiting today. The amateur boxer for India was the first medalist for the country in the Olympics
  • India got a new grandmaster in Swapnil Dhopade who completed the FIDE points related formalities by winning the 13th Shri Maheshwaranand Saraswati memorial all-India Open FIDE rating chess tournament in Pune on Friday.
  • South American Football giants Argentina and Brazil both lost their world cup qualifiers for Russia 2018. While Argentina lost to Ecuador by 2-0, Brazil was overpowered by Chile by the same margin
  • FIFA is going to meet on October 20 in an extraordinary executive meeting to discuss the corruption related scandals that has tarnished its image to a great extent
