  • On the very first day of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s visit to India, both the countries signed 18 MoUs in various areas like defence production, Manufacturing activities, trade, sharing of intelligence, clean energy collaboration etc. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi described Germany a natural partner and pledged to take the partnership forward in a meaningful and mutually beneficial way
  • On 05th October, 2015 the Nobel Prize Committee announced the names of the persons who have been chosen for the Nobel Prize for Physiology or medicine. The awardees are: Willliam Campbell (Ireland), Satoshi Omura (Japan) and Youyou Tu (China). While the first two have been chosen for developing a new drug to treat infection causedby roundworm parasites, the other has been honoured for her discovery of a novel herbal medicine to treat malaria
  • In the meeting with the experts concerned with The Sagarmala Project which aims to modernize the Indian ports, Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari announced am outlay of 70000 Cr to be spent on 12 major ports across India
  • Twitter announced Jack Dorsey as its new permanent CEO. He had been in the helm of the micro blogging site since July 1 as a temporary CEO after Dick Costolo stepped down from the post
  • After being appointed as the chairman of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India earlier this month, Ashish Bahuguna has been entrusted with the additional charge of CEO of the organisation
  • United Kingdom decided to send its first ever Cyber Security trade mission to India next week. The objective of the mission is to meet various players who are concerned about cyber security like financial institutions (Indian Banks’ Association, National Stock Exchange), Law Enforcement agencies (Mumbai Police) in order to collaborate in the areas concerning both the countries
  • 26th CORPAT (Coordinated Petrol) Exercise, 2015 began in the Andaman Seas between India and Indonesia. Started in 2002, this exercise is held twice in a year in order to strengthen ties between the countries in the area of maritime security. The exercise will continue till 21st October, 2015 with the BI-lateral maritime exercise also a part of it this year
  • A task force headed by former DRDO chief V K Atre is going to meet today in order to advise the government regarding the engagement of private sector in critical areas like submarines, aircraft and missiles production. This task force is a part of the initiatives taken by the government ahead of its much-awaited Defence Procurement Policy
  • Flipkart, the ecommerce giant, announced Mr Sriram Venkataraman as its new Chief Financial Officer in charge of the commerce platform whereas Pramod Jain has been appointed as Head of Taxation department
  • Russia’s competition watchdog asked Google to renew its contract with mobile
    manufactures in order to escape a steep penalty. This order came because Google was
    allegedly violating the competition laws by pre-installing its applications in the mobile
    phones as part of the contract
  • Perumal Murugan, a renowned Tamil writer, has been bestowed with the ILF Samanvay
    Bhasa Samman, 2015 given by India Habitat Centre for his outstanding contribution to
    Indian literature
  • According the Finance Ministry, Indian economy will grow at a rate of 7.5 percent in
    2015-16 despite seeing a dip in direct taxes collection by 5-7 percent
  • Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development has come out with the detailed
    plan of BEPS or Base Erosion and Profit Sharing to simplify the global tax laws to
    prevent abuse of the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreements (DTAA)
  • US and 11 other countries agreed on a landmark deal that will change the way trade is
    being carried out in the Pacific region. The agreement is a part of Trans Pacific
    Partnership (TPP) which aims to facilitate trade between these countries by removing
    tariff and non tariff barriers and this is going to be the biggest free-trade zone in the
    region with 40% of World’s GDP being a part of this partnership
  • Indian Government raises import duty on Ghee and Butter by 10 percent to 40 percent in
    order to safeguard the domestic industry from an influx of cheap import. This comes after
    India imposed anti-dumping duty on steel products from China
  • DRDO sets up World’s highest research centre at Changla in Ladakh. This is about
    17600 metre above the sea level and is going to be used as a natural preservation centre
    for rare and endangered medicinal plants. In addition to that, a lot of life science projects
    are going to be taken up at the laboratory
  • South Africa won the 2nd T20 International in Cuttack by 6 wickets to take a 2-0 lead in
    the 3-match T20 series. The last T20 match is going to be played in Kolkata on 08th
